The same goes for everyday living.  While studying in China you may have English speaking friends or roommates, but you will also find yourself surrounded by native Chinese speakers.  Everywhere you go you will hear the language and you will naturally pick up on the accent and vocabulary.  Also, in order to go about your daily life, you will have to use the Chinese you know to communicate your needs.
